Program Age Levels

Our Girl Scout programming is geared for girls ages 5-17 or Kindergarten through senior year of high school. Everyone is a Girl Scout, even when you are an adult volunteer member. The program age level breaks down into the following:
  • Daisy: K-1st
  • Brownie: 2-3rd
  • Junior: 4-5th
  • Cadette: 6-8th
  • Senior: 9-10th
  • Ambassador: 11th-12th

Troop Management

Girl Scouts is a volunteer organization.

Girl Scout troops are lead by volunteers. When your girl joins Girl Scouts, you are joining the Girl Scout organization too and some volunteering is required for her participation.

Traditionally, Girl Scout troops are lead by leader and co-leaders as a shared responsibility. Other adult volunteers may step into the roles of troop treasurer, cookie chair, nut sales chair, snack/email/field trip organizer, outdoor trained person. You can choose a variety of different roles to volunteer on behalf of your joining girl scout, even if you are a working parent!

More frequently, we are seeing a rise in Co-Op troops. Every girl that registers for the troop, an adult on behalf of her registers to be leader. Each (parent) takes on leading a meeting in a rotation of the girl scout year. Yes, this takes a little more coordination and planning, but once your troop calendar is set, things are great!

**Remember there must be a 2 unrelated adults at each Girl Scout activity and all volunteers must have a background check.

Troop Number & Troop Bank Acct.

Your troop number will be assigned to you by your Service Unit Registrar. It is a 5-digit number. This number identifies your troop.

After you have received your troop number and have identified your troop volunteer committee, you will receive a Bank Account Start up Form. Follow the form that is provided, do not go into the bank and open your own troop account. There are volunteers that can help support you, if you get stuck with this step. As an FYI Girl Scouts of CA Central Coast banks with Santa Barbara Bank and Trust, Wells Fargo, & Rabobank.

The troop bank account is intended for the use of the Girl Scout Troop, the girl scout troop deposits money that was earned through product sales into this account.

Troop Placement vs. Starting a Troop

Girl Scouts is a volunteer organization. Girl Scouts is a volunteer organization. Girl Scouts is a volunteer organization.

Every girl scout troop that is organized is run by volunteers. We can always use more volunteers. While placing your girl is a troop is possible, most times it is best to start a girl scout troop... It only takes 5 girls and 2 unrelated adults to start a girl scout troop. Girl Scout Membership Managers can connect to you local leaders, however, the volunteer girl scout leader can choose to take on a new girl. There are a couple different reasons why this process might come to a slowing pace in troop placement, it is possible that the leader does not have enough parental volunteer support- Girl Scouts has safety guidelines for adult to girl ratios, or the girls are working on an extensive project, or simply physical meeting space it at capacity.

What do you need to start a Girl Scout troop?
